I have a user who is stuck on the “Welcome” screen when he logs in. I know that could be any one of a billion different problems, but what can I do about it? I told him to just wait and it would eventually log in, but that was half an hour ago. I’ve been trying to use pstools from sysinternals to get a list of the process running on the box so I can kill whatever is hanging if that’s the problem , but all I get from it is “network path not found”.

Unplug the machine from the network and have the user log in. If he logs in, it is probably a GPO or login script hanging. I would enable verbose logging on the machine log in with a local account if domain accounts don’t work and see where it hangs. You could also enable verbose status, which will replace the “Welcome” with a more specific status.

Removing from the network is probably easier though, and usually clears this for me. The last time I saw this, it was because wifi was connected improperly, causing an identified network connection, but inability to communicate with anyone like the domain controller. Turning the wifi off fixed it right up short term. He was connected to the network via wireless and wire, so maybe it was just disconnecting the wifi, not disconnecting both, that fixed it.

I’ve ran into this problem many times. Recently it was due to the fact that the machine had a difficult time communicating with the domain server, other times it was due to a GPO locking up the machine. In both cases, restarting the machine helped. We had this happen to several computers last week and just assumed it was the latest Microsoft update. Most of them eventually came up and did not have that happen again, one we had to roll back the update, and others came up normally after we boot them to safe mode first.

This user was added to a group that had folder redirection for My Documents. Thanks for your suggestions. Hopefully if this happens again, the screen will say “Transferring documents to share” instead of “Welcome. To continue this discussion, please ask a new question.

This sounds like a dream come true for many reasons. Can I do this to all my machines with GPO?
